Reality check


All too often people get online to find a quick fix for their financial problem.

I’ll give you an example. My business partners and I see this kind of question a lot.  “Can I make money without investing any money?”

In fact, maybe you have the same question.

Here’s my short answer: It’s possible.

But here’s the online business reality.

Most newbies want to see results fast without investing any money. Depending on what business model you get into, 90% of the time it’s not possible to see results within the first week without any investment. Let’s get real here.  It’s much easier to implement any strategies if you have money to invest into running ad campaigns. If you were to take a look at it from another perspective, it’s no different than starting a brick and mortar business. But in that business model, you need to pay rent for your store, pay your employees, inventory, utilities, etc.

In most online business models, you don’t even need to have anyone to work for you when you’re starting out. (Though you can after your business takes off and you want leverage). You can work from anywhere you have an Internet connection. Your investment is pretty much investing into a proven business system that you can leverage, set up separate budget for ads, and learning the skills to build a successful business.


Money and investment wise, here’s the main difference; You’d need to invest minimum tens of thousands of dollars into building a brick and mortar business. Or for a franchise opportunity, it can be a lot more (some into the millions).  With an online business, you don’t need to spend as much. You can get started for as low as $30-$50 a month. But you still need to be serious in treating your online business like you would if you have a brick and mortar business. Most people don’t treat their online business like a real business.

If you absolutely have no money to spend, here’s what I suggest you do. You can build lots of free websites through Squidoo lenses and free websites like blogger, free wordpress, weebly, any web 2.0 properties basically. You don’t even need to get a hosting, domain or invest money in anything. The products can be something you pick off JVzoo, Clickbank or even CPA network. They’re free to join, (CPA network aren’t easy to get into though and it can be a whole new topic for me to write).  While you can make money with this approach, you will need to invest a LOT of time while being at the mercy of these websites. They don’t like affiliate marketers or any biz ops. Your free websites can be taken down at any time also if someone decides to be an ass and report you, just because they see you as a threat or they don’t like you for whatever reason.

Would I do the same thing if I had no money though? Not exactly, but that’s because I know how brutal it’d be to be at the mercy of other people/websites. I do use the web 2.0 properties but only for backlinking purpose.

Everyone’s different though. Some people may be okay to not be in control of their hard work for a while, as long as they get to generate some commissions.

If I was to build my business from scratch with no money, I would still find ways to find the money (garage sale,  sell services, do anything to get the money so I can get back on my feet). And then I would rebuild my business three times as fast within a short six months. Yep no kidding on that. Things I’d do immediately:

1) Buy a web hosting and a personal domain name
2) Install WordPress into my own domain
3) Use premium theme (just like what I use here for example)
4) Build my list immediately
5) Invest into a program that has massive momentum behind it and leverage it to sell.

I’m my own webmaster,  I have full control of what I want to publish or promote, and I don’t need to worry about anyone shutting down my website.

Let’s face it, we live in a world full of advertising. We see ads on TV, all over the Internet, magazines, newspapers, on mobile phones, all over social media channels, all over the mall, painted all over public transportations, and even when playing games. There’s no way you can escape seeing ads unless, well, you fully disconnect yourself from today’s world.

That being said, people are used to seeing all sort of ads. From bad ads to downright weird ads. Over the years, there’ve been a lot of weird ads that went viral and actually brought in revenues (like Old Spice). Anyway, if you’re running a business online, advertising is part of your business.

Here’s a tip I want to share with you today: Don’t sell but help people. But before we get to that, you need to understand how people’s minds work in general. People like to see something bold, something unusual. So use this as an advantage to write compelling and bold ads to get people into your funnel. As soon as someone goes into your funnel, do the opposite: don’t sell. Ask any successful entrepreneurs, they’ll tell you the same thing.

Here’s something to keep in mind: If you want people to join your business, sell the benefits. You need to build relationships and understand the principle of how to sell without selling. In a way, selling is not selling, rather it’s all about helping your prospects.  Give your prospects value and reasons to do business with you. This is the only way you’ll wear down your prospects because you grow on them. And at that point watch the commissions and the money rolling in to your bank, kind of like this 😉


It may sound confusing to you, but you need to put yourself  in your prospects’ shoes. If you know what problem your prospect is facing, and you come in with a solution, you’re in a good position to close.  If you’re an affiliate marketer, you must thoroughly understand what your company’s core values are, and the products you’re promoting. Identify who your target audience is. Every industry is different, and this is where research comes in. If you’re not putting in the time to understand your industry and what makes people ‘tick’, you won’t succeed. Look around you and you’ll see what works vs. what doesn’t work. That’s the beautiful thing about being in the Internet Marketing industry, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You just need to know what worked for other marketers and do it better in your own version. It’s all about learning from there on.

You need to also look at the market and trends. For example,  if you understand technologies and know where we are headed ( i.e. mobile), then you should know that mobile marketing is the next evolution of Internet Marketing.  You need to know how mobile technologies are going to impact your business. Think about it.  Your audience are already hanging out on their mobile phones 24/7. The internet is constantly evolving. And if you want your business to grow, you need to adapt and evolve as well.

Here’s another thing for you to think about. Understand that you’re an entrepreneur, not a fly by marketer. There’s a big difference between the two. Don’t follow the wrong people who tells you to sell hard, because that’s not the way this business is built. Entrepreneurs have deep passions for what they do. Money is not their primary motivator. If you’re looking for a quick solution to your financial problem, this isn’t the right industry to be in. You’re going to be disappointed and most likely become one of the negative people who always label everything online as “scam”.

Change your view about making money online completely. Your mission in this industry is to be a solution provider and make life easier for others. Watch how everything changes when you do this.

In life you’ll have people who support you no matter what you do. And there are people who will doubt and criticize your choices. Maybe you want to get married and your parents disagree with your choice of spouse. Or you want to move to another job and your friends think you’re making a big mistake. People can disagree with you no matter what you do.

In business, it’s the same way. Many people aren’t as lucky as I was when I first got started several years ago.   My husband and family supported me and they always believed in me. But there were distant relatives and even some very close friends who thought I made the biggest mistake when I left my six figure job.

Regardless of what you do, there will always be people who discourage you from pursuing the thing you wanted to do. Sometimes it almost seems like these people are happy to see you fail,  that they just wanted to say “I told you so“.  In reality, we should be happy for successful people. We should celebrate their success because entrepreneurs are a rare breed. They walked down the path that’s less traveled.  While most people are afraid of failure, entrepreneurs know that failures are to be celebrated. For this reason alone, I admire my fellow entrepreneurs.

Anywho, I wanted to give you several tips on how to avoid negatives:

1) Find ways to limit your contact with negative people. Obviously this isn’t going to happen if it happens to be your spouse or someone very close to you. The more my business grow the more I distant myself from people who don’t believe in my vision, because I proved them wrong in the first time but people are always looking for something to prove themselves right. 😉

Now here’s the thing, even if you’re surrounded by the most negative people in the world, you can still create a positive environment for yourself if you read, listen and watch any personal growth materials.

2) You’re your own worse enemy. Look at the person inside the mirror. The only person you need to compete with is that person that you see in the mirror everyday. People don’t believe in themselves and I often hear people who say “I hate myself”. Now listen, you must first believe in yourself and love yourself. Quit judging yourself, learn to love and respect yourself, and others will naturally be inclined to follow you.

3) This may sound like a broken record, but you have to remain optimistic and positive. Attitude is altitude. Though I want you to remember this, being positive alone will never produce result. I know people who invest in hundreds of hours of personal development but they remain broke. Why?  Just like a diamond in the rough, you need to polish yourself by taking action to bring your talents and what you’ve learned to fruition.

4) Ignore your haters and the negative people. The more you pay attention to them, the more they enjoy getting the attention they’re seeking. Their goal is to prove themselves right, they’re judging you because their mind has been shaped a certain way. If you want to succeed, you must learn how to ignore that negative noise.  The best revenge to your haters is by show them the end result, a successful person.

5) Invest in yourself. Simply put, if you’re not learning and growing you have no business. The industry is constantly evolving, there are always new things we can learn to improve ourselves and our business. The greatest leaders and businessmen/businesswomen in history are relentless in their pursuit of knowledge.

I want you to know and realize that this business comes down to three things:

– Getting traffic
– Conversion
– Personal development. “Your income can only grow to the extent that you do” – T Harv Eker (Author of Millionaire Mind). Mindset determines your outcome in your business. Hint: Average CEOs read 4-5 books a month. 

With that being said, hone up your skills, read/watch/listen to good materials that can help your business and yourself. Get productive!

It’s too crowded at the bottom; hundreds of thousands of people get into the home-based business industry daily. Imagine that for a second, that’s a lot of people from all around the world looking to start a business and work from home.

So How To Be A Successful Marketer?

I’m here to inspire and give you some tips today on how you can be a successful marketer and run a successful business from home.

I want you to keep this in mind; no one started out and became successful overnight. Successful people went through lots of errors and failures. But there’s one thing that you must establish early. The absolute #1 rule you must abide by to building a sustainable online business is: brand yourself early.

People do business with people they like and resonate with. The only way you can get clients to like you is by being yourself. Don’t envy others; don’t be someone else, everyone else is already taken. Just be you.

Branding yourself early will get you the right people who’d follow you and naturally like you. You’ll build a core group of followers who believe in your vision and what you do. And for this reason, you need to be 100% clear on your own vision. Gain clarity on how you want to achieve success, and where you want to be in five years (in case you missed my email yesterday, here’s the blog post).

The next thing you need to do is create a website with you as the brand. Think of a website or a personal blog like a name card. People come to see you and find out what you offer (products or services), and decide if they want to do business with you. Make sense?

I always recommend people getting their own blog and start their own website for this reason. Not in other people’s domain, not a free blog, but your own domains where you have full control of it. This is all part of personal branding effort that can take you far. Many people don’t brand themselves; they brand the company they’re promoting (i.e. if you’re in network marketing /mlm for example). This is a HUGE mistake. While, yes you do need a product to promote, you also need to be your own businessperson. Meaning, everything is customized to you or your business name, down to your very own sales funnel.  If the company you’re promoting goes down, then what happens next? You’re dead in the water. And quite the opposite, if you’re branding yourself, your followers will follow you wherever you go.

Most newbies immediately assume that making money online is easy. Let me be the bearer of the bad news – that’s marketing for ya!

If only it was that easy, everyone would have been a millionaire by now. But why are the failures rate SO darn high in this industry? 98% is not a laughing matter.  Because most people came to this industry with the wrong mindset; they are looking for easy fix to their financial situation, and unwilling to do what’s required to get the result.

It’s just like this, people buy anti aging products, but why can’t they fully get rid of the wrinkles? Even though the advertisement says people can remove all their wrinkles with it?

People buy weight loss supplements but why are people still not losing weight?

I hope you know the answer to why people still buy the products, right?

It’s marketing.

Supplements can help but it’s what you put inside your body that matters.

The same thing applies here with every online biz ops ads you come across. It’s marketing. But the ultimate product is you (not the biz op).

If you want to promote that particular product or biz op, you must first familiarize yourself with the product, believe in it, and use it yourself. If you don’t even believe and use it, how can you know that your product is the solution to people’s problems?

You want to establish yourself as the trusted brand that your audience go to. Because many of them will continue to be your long term loyal followers and customers.

Think of a brand that you personally use and love. Why do you keep using the same brand? From clothing lines, food, soap, supplements, anything really – you already have your own preference.

That’s exactly the same with online business regardless what niche you’re in. When people like you, they’ll come back to you because they know you’re the trusted source regardless how many competitors you have out there.

How many times have you thought of this “I want to make money but nothing is working!” since you jumped onto the Internet Marketing space? Maybe you wanted to start a home based business or an online business but nothing is working.

You have a BIG dream, but you’re not getting anywhere.

Let me ask you a few questions…

1) Can you describe exactly how you want your life to look like 5 years from now?

2) Are you making use of your precious time every day to work towards your goal?

What would your answers be?

Most of the time, people have clear dreams and can describe what they want in life but they don’t have the focus and clarity in converting the dreams to becoming a reality. People get so busy and involved in their day job and day-to-day activities that they fail to make the time for the success they desire. They fail to bring their dreams to reality because they don’t want it bad enough.

Think about it.

Until you come up with a solid written plan of exactly how you’re going from point A to point B, you will go around in circles without result. Here’s the cold hard truth, you don’t have time when it comes to business. Money doesn’t wait for you. People think they have time, and that’s a terrible mistake. Don’t wait for the “perfect” time because it’s never going to come. Once you have a written plan, it’s all about execution. And to execute, you need absolute focus.

Allow me to talk more about focus here, because it kills me when I see people wasting their time and money jumping from one program to another without result. I want to be the person who makes it simple for you. If you’ve been failing in one program or biz op, you’ll continue to fail until you decide not to fail any longer. You may be saying, “that’s ridiculous Val, no one wants to fail, why would I want to fail?”  As ridiculous as that may sound, that’s the problem with most people who gets into this industry. They don’t want to fail but their action says the opposite.  They take this industry like a gambling scene. They may have better luck going to casino burning their money than biz op hopping. People ask me what’s my secret, my secret is FOCUS.

Focus means LESS in everything:

1) Buying program or attempting to “absorb” more information that get you down the “information overload” path, and most likely collecting digital dusts on your computer
2) Quit your instant messenger and chit chatting with other people
3) Stop checking your emails every 5 minutes and here’s an important one too: stop reading the news every hour.
4) Quit playing games
5) If you know who’s doing what on your Facebook network every minute of everyday, you’re not being productive
6) TV … on average Americans spend 36 hours a week watching TV. Imagine how much time is wasted. If people are using half of those hours to do something productive, imagine what kind of result they’d get with their business.

Instead you want to focus on MORE doing. Implement everything you learn immediately – just do it. If you put it off, you’re not going to do it.


Let me give you an example here:

Day 1 – I’m super pumped to get started with a brand new program. I watched one hour of the getting started video, then I decided to take a 30 minutes break. Then my favorite show on TV was up, I thought I should just watch the TV first and get back to the program later. A few hours later, I got tired and my brain told me I should sleep.

End of Day 1 – One hour of getting started video watched – 0 hours put into business

Day 2 – I got on the computer and started the day by reading some news.  And then I thought, maybe I should write my first blog post. But then something else came to mind – I thought maybe I should post on my Facebook wall first. Then another thing popped up and I thought, “let’s do a video”. But then…Eh, I wasn’t feeling it; maybe I should of gone back to watching the entire new program I just bought.

End of Day 2 – still nothing accomplished – 0 hours put into business.

Day 3 – I had all the motivation in the world on this day and decided to learn the program. But then  “ahh…this is so complicated!”

End of Day 3 – I was already bothered by the fact I’d have to put a lot of hours into this business program. 

End of Day 3 – Still 0 hours put into business

Day 4 – I started to get bored with this program.  Could there be something else out that’s easier?

End of Day 4 – Started to feel like this program wasn’t the right one for me.  Going to look for something else.

Four days passed, still nothing accomplished. You’ve already wasted your time and money.

This is how people generally treat their business in this industry. This is why people aren’t getting anything done with their business, and come up with a million excuses why they’re failing.

Do you see how the illustration above get your mind cluttered fast? You have no clarity; as a result you have no output.  When your mind is cluttered, you can’t be focused. You have no sense of direction and you’re often confused of what action you should be taking.

This is why you need absolute focus.

When you’re being laser focused, your mind is shaped to get the best end result.

Stop looking for the NBT (next best thing). Pick the business that you like, work with a mentor that you resonate with, and connect with other entrepreneurs.  Stick to that same program for six months while being laser focused.

That’s your success recipe.
